We present the discovery of NGC253-SNFC-dw1, a new satellite galaxy in the remote stellar halo of the Sculptor Group spiral, NGC 253. The system was revealed using deep resolved star photometry obtained as part of the Subaru Near-Field Cosmology Survey that uses the Hyper Suprime-Cam on the Subaru Telescope. Although rather luminous ($\rm{M_{V}} = -11.7 \pm 0.2$) and massive ($M_* \sim 1.25\times 10^7~\rm{M}_{\odot}$), the system is one of the most diffuse satellites yet known, with a half-light radius of $\rm{R_{h}} = 3.37 \pm 0.36$ kpc and an average surface brightness of $\sim 30.1$ mag arcmin$^{-2}$ within the $\rm{R_{h}}$. The colour-magnitude diagram shows a dominant old ($\sim 10$ Gyr) and metal-poor ($\rm{[M/H]}=-1.5 \pm 0.1$ dex) stellar population, as well as several candidate thermally-pulsing asymptotic giant branch stars. The distribution of red giant branch stars is asymmetrical and displays two elongated tidal extensions pointing towards NGC 253, suggestive of a highly disrupted system being observed at apocenter. NGC253-SNFC-dw1 has a size comparable to that of the puzzling Local Group dwarfs Andromeda XIX and Antlia 2 but is two magnitudes brighter. While unambiguous evidence of tidal disruption in these systems has not yet been demonstrated, the morphology of NGC253-SNFC-dw1 clearly shows that this is a natural path to produce such diffuse and extended galaxies. The J-region Asymptotic Giant Branch (JAGB) method is a standard candle that leverages the constant luminosities of color-selected, carbon-rich AGB stars, measured in the near infrared at 1.2 microns. The Chicago-Carnegie Hubble Program (CCHP) has obtained JWST imaging of the SN Ia host galaxies NGC 7250, NGC 4536, and NGC 3972. With these observations, the JAGB method can be studied for the first time using JWST. Lee et al. 2022 [arXiv:2205.11323] demonstrated the JAGB magnitude is optimally measured in the outer disks of galaxies, because in the inner regions the JAGB magnitude can vary significantly due to a confluence of reddening, blending, and crowding effects. However, determining where the 'outer disk' lies can be subjective. Therefore, we introduce a novel method for systematically selecting the outer disk. In a given galaxy, the JAGB magnitude is first separately measured in concentric regions, and the 'outer disk' is then defined as the first radial bin where the JAGB magnitude stabilizes to a few hundredths of a magnitude. After successfully employing this method in our JWST galaxy sample, we find the JAGB stars are well-segregated from other stellar populations in color-magnitude space, and have observed dispersions about their individual F115W modes of $\sigma_{N7250}=0.32$ mag, $\sigma_{N4536}=0.34$ mag, and $\sigma_{N3972}=0.35$ mag. These measured dispersions are similar to the scatter measured for the JAGB stars in the LMC using 2MASS data ($\sigma=0.33$ mag, Weinberg & Nikolaev 2001 [arXiv:astro-ph/0003204 ). In conclusion, the JAGB stars as observed with JWST clearly demonstrate their considerable power both as high-precision extragalactic distance indicators and as SN Ia supernova calibrators., Comment: 13 pages, 7 figures, accepted to ApJ

The star formation histories (SFHs) of galactic stellar haloes offer crucial insights into the merger history of the galaxy and the effects of those mergers on their hosts. Such measurements have revealed that while the Milky Way's most important merger was 8-10 Gyr ago, M31's largest merger was more recent, within the last few Gyr. Unfortunately, the required halo SFH measurements are extremely observationally expensive outside of the Local Group. Here we use asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars brighter than the tip of the red giant branch (RGB) to constrain stellar halo SFHs. Both stellar population models and archival datasets show that the AGB/RGB ratio constrains the time before which 90% of the stars formed, $t_{90}$. We find AGB stars in the haloes of three highly-inclined roughly Milky Way-mass galaxies with resolved star measurements from the Hubble Space Telescope; this population is most prominent in the stellar haloes of NGC 253 and NGC 891, suggesting that their stellar haloes contain stars born at relatively late times, with inferred $t_{90}\sim 6\pm1.5$Gyr. This ratio also varies from region to region, tending towards higher values along the major axis and in tidal streams or shells. By combining our measurements with previous constraints, we find a tentative anticorrelation between halo age and stellar halo mass, a trend that exists in models of galaxy formation but has never been elucidated before, i.e, the largest stellar haloes of Milky-Way mass galaxies were assembled more recently., Comment: 20 Pages, 10 Figures

M64, often called the "Evil Eye" galaxy, is unique among local galaxies. Beyond its dramatic, dusty nucleus, it also hosts an outer gas disk that counter-rotates relative to its stars. The mass of this outer disk is comparable to the gas content of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC), prompting the idea that it was likely accreted in a recent minor merger. Yet, detailed follow-up studies of M64's outer disk have shown no evidence of such an event, leading to other interpretations, such as a "flyby" interaction with the distant diffuse satellite Coma P. We present Subaru Hyper Suprime-Cam observations of M64's stellar halo, which resolve its stellar populations and reveal a spectacular radial shell feature, oriented $\sim$30$^{\circ}$ relative to the major axis and along the rotation axis of the outer gas disk. The shell is $\sim$45 kpc southeast of M64, while a similar but more diffuse plume to the northwest extends to $>$100 kpc. We estimate a stellar mass and metallicity for the southern shell of $M_{\star} {=} 1.80~{\pm}~0.54{\times}10^8~M_{\odot}$ and [M/H] $=$ $-$1.0, respectively, and a similar mass of $1.42~{\pm}~0.71{\times}10^8 M_{\odot}$ for the northern plume. Taking into account the accreted material in M64's inner disk, we estimate a total stellar mass for the progenitor satellite of $M_{\rm \star,prog}~{\simeq}~5{\times}10^8~M_{\odot}$. These results suggest that M64 is in the final stages of a minor merger with a gas-rich satellite strikingly similar to the SMC, in which M64's accreted counter-rotating gas originated, and which is responsible for the formation of its dusty inner star-forming disk., Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ Letters

We present an extensive grid of numerical simulations quantifying the uncertainties in measurements of the Tip of the Red Giant Branch (TRGB). These simulations incorporate a luminosity function composed of 2 magnitudes of red giant branch (RGB) stars leading up to the tip, with asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars contributing exclusively to the luminosity function for at least a magnitude above the RGB tip. We quantify the sensitivity of the TRGB detection and measurement to three important error sources: (1) the sample size of stars near the tip, (2) the photometric measurement uncertainties at the tip, and (3) the degree of self-crowding of the RGB population. The self-crowding creates a population of supra-TRGB stars due to the blending of one or more RGB stars just below the tip. This last population is ultimately difficult, though still possible, to disentangle from true AGB stars. In the analysis given here, the precepts and general methodology as used in the Chicago-Carnegie Hubble Program (CCHP) has been followed. However, in the Appendix, we introduce and test a set of new tip detection kernels which internally incorporate self-consistent smoothing. These are generalizations of the two-step model used by the CCHP (smoothing followed by Sobel-filter tip detection), where the new kernels are based on successive binomial-coefficient approximations to the Derivative-of-a-Gaussian (DoG) edge detector, as is commonly used in modern digital image processing., Comment: Accepte to the Astronomical Journal

It is not yet settled how the combination of secular processes and merging gives rise to the bulges and pseudobulges of galaxies. The nearby ($D\sim$ 4.2 Mpc) disk galaxy M94 (NGC 4736) has the largest pseudobulge in the local universe, and offers a unique opportunity for investigating the role of merging in the formation of its pseudobulge. We present a first ever look at M94's stellar halo, which we expect to contain a fossil record of M94's past mergers. Using Subaru's Hyper Suprime-Cam, we resolve and identify red giant branch (RGB) stars in M94's halo, finding two distinct populations. After correcting for completeness through artificial star tests, we can measure the radial profile of each RGB population. The metal-rich RGB stars show an unbroken exponential profile to a radius of 30 kpc that is a clear continuation of M94's outer disk. M94's metal poor stellar halo is detectable over a wider area and clearly separates from its metal-rich disk. By integrating the halo density profile, we infer a total accreted stellar mass of $\sim 2.8 \times 10^8 M_\odot$, with a median metallicity of [M/H] $=-$1.4. This indicates that M94's most-massive past merger was with a galaxy similar to, or less massive than, the Small Magellanic Cloud. Few nearby galaxies have had such a low-mass dominant merger; therefore we suggest that M94's pseudobulge was not significantly impacted by merging., Comment: 19 pages, 12 figures, 1 table; Published in ApJ on April 14, 2023

NGC 4839 is the brightest galaxy (cD) of the NGC 4839 group at $R\approx 1$ Mpc in the south-west of the Coma cluster, which is known to be falling into Coma. However, it has been controversial whether it is in the first phase of infall or in the second phase of infall after passing the Coma center. We present a wide field study of globular clusters (GCs) in NGC 4839 and its environment based on Hyper Suprime-Cam $gr$ images in the Subaru archive. We compare the GC system of NGC 4839 with that of NGC 4816, which is the brightest member (S0) of the nearby group and lies at a similar distance in the west from the Coma center. Interestingly the spatial distribution of the GCs in NGC 4839 is significantly more compact than that of the GCs in NGC 4816. In addition, the radial number density profile of the GCs in NGC 4839 shows an abrupt drop at $R_{N4839}\approx 80$ kpc, while that of the GCs in NGC 4816 shows a continuous slow decline even in the outer region at $80

We present a free-form model of SMACS0723, the first cluster observed with JWST. This model makes no strong assumptions about the distribution of mass (mostly dark matter) in the cluster and we use it to study the possible correlation between dark matter with the intracluster light and distribution of globular clusters. To explore the uncertainty in mass modelling, we derive three lens models based on spectroscopically confirmed systems and new candidate systems with redshifts predicted by the lens model derived from the spectroscopic systems. We find that beyond the radius of influence of the BCG, the total mass does not trace the ICL, implying the need for a dark component (dark matter). Two loop-like structures observed in the intracluster light do not have an obvious correspondence with the total mass (mostly dark matter) distribution. The radial profiles of the ICL and the distribution of globular clusters are similar to each other, but steeper than the profile of the lens model. More specifically, we find that the total mass is shallower by 1 dex in log scale than both ICL and globular cluster profiles. M104 (NGC 4594, the Sombrero galaxy) is a mysterious massive early-type galaxy that shows a dominant bulge and a prominent disk. However, the presence of a halo in M104 has been elusive, and it is not yet known how M104 has acquired such a peculiar structure. Using wide ($\sim2$ deg$^2$) and deep $ugi$ images of M104 obtained with the CFHT/MegaCam, we detect a large number of globular clusters (GCs) found out to $R\approx35'$ ($\sim100$ kpc). The color distribution of these GCs shows two subpopulations: a blue (metal-poor) system and a red (metal-rich) system. The total number of GCs is estimated to be $N_{GC}=1610\pm30$ and the specific frequency to be $S_{N}=1.8\pm0.1$. The radial number density profile of the GCs is steep in the inner region at $R<20'$, and becomes shallow in the outer region at $20'

The faint and ultrafaint dwarf galaxies in the Local Group form the observational bedrock upon which our understanding of small-scale cosmology rests. In order to understand whether this insight generalizes, it is imperative to use resolved-star techniques to discover similarly faint satellites in nearby galaxy groups. We describe our search for ultrafaint galaxies in the M81 group using deep ground-based resolved-star data sets from Subaru's Hyper Suprime-Cam. We present one new ultrafaint dwarf galaxy in the M81 group and identify five additional extremely low surface brightness candidate ultrafaint dwarfs that reach deep into the ultrafaint regime to $M_V \sim -6$ (similar to current limits for Andromeda satellites). These candidates' luminosities and sizes are similar to known Local Group dwarf galaxies Tucana B, Canes Venatici I, Hercules, and Bo\"otes I. Most of these candidates are likely to be real, based on tests of our techniques on blank fields. Intriguingly, all of these candidates are spatially clustered around NGC 3077, which is itself an M81 group satellite in an advanced state of tidal disruption. This is somewhat surprising, as M81 itself and its largest satellite M82 are both substantially more massive than NGC 3077 and by virtue of their greater masses, would have been expected to host as many or more ultrafaint candidates. We present a survey of globular clusters (GCs) in the massive gravitational lens cluster SMACS J0723.3-7327 at $z=0.39$ based on the early released JWST/NIRCam images. In the color-magnitude diagrams of the point sources we find clearly a rich population of intracluster GCs that spread in a wide area of the cluster. Their ages, considering the cluster redshift, are younger than 9.5 Gyr. The F200W (AB) magnitudes of these GCs, $26.5<{F200W_0} <29.5$ mag, correspond to $-15.2<{M_{F200W}} <-12.2$ mag, showing that they belong to the brightest GCs (including ultracompact dwarfs). The spatial distributions of these GCs show a megaparsec-scale structure elongated along the major axis of the brightest cluster galaxy. In addition, they show a large number of substructures, some of which are consistent with the substructures seen in the map of diffuse intracluster light. The GC number density map is, in general, consistent with the dark matter mass density map based on the strong lensing analysis in the literature. The radial number density profile of the GCs in the outer region is steeper than the dark matter mass profile obtained from lensing models. These results are consistent with those for the GCs found in the deep HST images of Abell 2744, another massive cluster at $z=0.308$, and in simulated galaxy clusters. A critical analysis and comparison of different methods for obtaining point spread function (PSF) photometry are carried out. Deep ACS observations of NGC3370 were reduced using four distinct approaches. These reductions explore a number of methodological differences: software packages (DAOPHOT and DOLPHOT), input images (individual and stacked frames), PSF models (synthetic and empirical), and aperture correction methods (automatic and manual). A comparison of the photometry leads to the following results: 1) Photometric incompleteness between individual reductions shows only a minimal difference (<10%). 2) Statistical errors are 20% to 30% smaller for DAOPHOT runs on stacked frames than DOLPHOT runs on individual frames. 3) Statistical errors assigned directly by the photometry codes are 25% to 50% smaller than the errors measured from artificial star tests. 4) Systematic errors are magnitude dependent and become larger at the faint end, at the level of $\sigma_s\sim0.1$ mag. 5) The automatic aperture correction routines in DOLPHOT result in a significant systematic error ($\sigma_s \sim 0.05$ mag). 6) Individual reductions agree well at the 0.02 mag level when the systematic errors are properly corrected through artificial star tests. The reasonable agreement between the reductions leads to important implications that i) the reduction dependent errors can be reduced to a 1% level in the luminosity distance scale, and ii) the stacked frame photometry can be a good means to study non-variable stars in external galaxies., Comment: 18 pages, 11 figures, 5 tables, submitted

The study of outer halo globular cluster (GC) populations can give insight into galaxy merging, globular cluster accretion and the origin of GCs. We use archival Subaru Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) data in concert with space-based GALEX, IRAC and Gaia EDR3 data to select candidate Globular clusters (GCs) in the outer halo of the M81 group for confirmation and future study. We use a small sample of previously-discovered GCs to tune our selection criteria, finding that bright already-known GCs in the M81 group have sizes that are typically slightly larger than the Subaru PSF in our fields. In the optical bands, GCs appear to have colours that are only slightly different from stars. The inclusion of archival IRAC data yields dramatic improvements in colour separation, as the long wavelength baseline aids somewhat in the separation from stars and clearly separates GCs from many compact background galaxies. We show that some previously spectroscopically-identified GCs in the M81 group are instead foreground stars or background galaxies. GCs close to M82 have radial velocities suggesting that they fell into the M81 group along with M82. The overall M81 GC luminosity function is similar to the Milky Way and M31. M81's outer halo GCs are similar to the Milky Way in their metallicities and numbers, and much less numerous than M31's more metal-rich outer halo GC population. These properties reflect differences in the three galaxies' merger histories, highlighting the possibility of using outer halo GCs to trace merger history in larger samples of galaxies.

The J-region asymptotic giant branch (JAGB) method is a new standard candle that is based on the stable intrinsic J-band magnitude of color-selected carbon stars, and has a precision comparable to other primary distance indicators such as Cepheids and the TRGB. We further test the accuracy of the JAGB method in the Local Group Galaxy M33. M33's moderate inclination, low metallicity, and nearby proximity make it an ideal laboratory for tests of systematics in local distance indicators. Using high-precision optical BVI and near-infrared JHK photometry, we explore the application of three independent distance indicators: the JAGB method, the Cepheid Leavitt Law, and the TRGB. We find: $\mu_0$ (TRGB I) = 24.72 +/- 0.02 (stat) +/- 0.07 (sys) mag, $\mu_0$ (TRGB NIR) = 24.72 +/- 0.04 (stat) +/- 0.10 (sys) mag, $\mu_0$ (JAGB) = 24.67 +/- 0.03 (stat) +/- 0.04 (sys) mag, $\mu_0$ (Cepheid) = 24.71 +/- 0.04 (stat) +/- 0.01 (sys) mag. For the first time, we also directly compare a JAGB distance using ground-based and space-based photometry. We measure: $\mu_0$ (JAGB F110W) = 24.71 +/- 0.06 (stat) +/- 0.05 (sys) mag using the (F814-F110W) color combination to effectively isolate the JAGB stars. In this paper, we measure a distance to M33 accurate to 2% and provide further evidence that the JAGB method is a powerful extragalactic distance indicator that can effectively probe a local measurement of the Hubble constant using spaced-based observations. Having two "sibling" Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) in the same galaxy offers additional advantages in reducing a variety of systematic errors involved in estimating the Hubble constant, $H_{0}$. NGC 4414 is a nearby galaxy included in the Hubble Space Telescope Key Project to measure its distance using Cepheid variables. It hosts two sibling SNe Ia: SN 2021J and SN 1974G. This provides the opportunity to improve the precision of the previous estimate of $H_{0}$, which was based solely on SN 1974G. Here we present new optical $BVRI$ photometry obtained at the Observatorio de Sierra Nevada and complement it with Swift UVOT $UBV$ data, which cover the first 70 days of emission of SN 2021J. A first look at SN 2021J optical spectra obtained with the Gran Telescopio Canarias (GTC) reveals typical SN type Ia features. The main SN luminosity parameters for the two sibling SNe are obtained by using SNooPy, a light curve fitting code based on templates. Using a hierarchical bayesian approach, we build the Hubble diagram with a sample of 96 SNe Ia obtained from the Combined Pantheon Sample in the redshift range $z = 0.02-0.075$, and calibrate the zero point with the two sibling type-Ia SNe in NGC 4414. We report a value of the Hubble constant $H_{0}$ $= 72.19 \pm 2.32$ (stat.) $\pm 3.42$ (syst.) km s$^{-1}$Mpc$^{-1}$. We expect a reduction of the systematic error after a new analysis of the Cepheids period-luminosity relation using the upcoming Gaia DR4 and additional Cepheids from the HST and JWST.

In this paper we will list a few important goals that need to be addressed in the next decade, also taking into account the current discordances between the different cosmological probes, such as the disagreement in the value of the Hubble constant $H_0$, the $\sigma_8$--$S_8$ tension, and other less statistically significant anomalies. While these discordances can still be in part the result of systematic errors, their persistence after several years of accurate analysis strongly hints at cracks in the standard cosmological scenario and the necessity for new physics or generalisations beyond the standard model. In this paper, we focus on the $5.0\,\sigma$ tension between the {\it Planck} CMB estimate of the Hubble constant $H_0$ and the SH0ES collaboration measurements. After showing the $H_0$ evaluations made from different teams using different methods and geometric calibrations, we list a few interesting new physics models that could alleviate this tension and discuss how the next decade's experiments will be crucial. Moreover, we focus on the tension of the {\it Planck} CMB data with weak lensing measurements and redshift surveys, about the value of the matter energy density $\Omega_m$, and the amplitude or rate of the growth of structure ($\sigma_8,f\sigma_8$). We list a few interesting models proposed for alleviating this tension, and we discuss the importance of trying to fit a full array of data with a single model and not just one parameter at a time. Additionally, we present a wide range of other less discussed anomalies at a statistical significance level lower than the $H_0$--$S_8$ tensions which may also constitute hints towards new physics, and we discuss possible generic theoretical approaches that can collectively explain the non-standard nature of these signals.[Abridged], Comment: Contribution to Snowmass 2021. 224 pages, 27 figures. The current Cepheid-calibrated distance ladder measurement of $H_0$ is reported to be in tension with the values inferred from the cosmic microwave background (CMB), assuming standard cosmology. However, some tip of the red giant branch (TRGB) estimates report $H_0$ in better agreement with the CMB. Hence, it is critical to reduce systematic uncertainties in local measurements to understand the Hubble tension. In this paper, we propose a uniform distance ladder between the second and third rungs, combining SNe~Ia observed by the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) with a TRGB calibration of their absolute luminosity. A large, volume-limited sample of both calibrator and Hubble flow SNe~Ia from the \emph{same} survey minimizes two of the largest sources of systematics: host-galaxy bias and non-uniform photometric calibration. We present results from a pilot study using existing TRGB distance to the host galaxy of ZTF SN~Ia SN 2021rhu (aka ZTF21abiuvdk) in NGC7814. Combining the ZTF calibrator with a volume-limited sample from the first data release of ZTF Hubble flow SNe~Ia, we infer $H_0 = 76.94 \pm 6.4\, {\rm km}\,{\rm s^{-1}}\,{\rm Mpc^{-1}}$, an $8.3 \%$ measurement. The error budget is dominated by the single object calibrating the SN~Ia luminosity in this pilot study. However, the ZTF sample includes already five other SNe~Ia within $\sim$ 20 Mpc for which TRGB distances can be obtained with HST.
